With a presence across several buildings and attractions thanks to its faculty, staff, students, and alums, the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) connected with tens of thousands of guests at the 2024 Minnesota State Fair.

Veterinary volunteers helped power the CHS Miracle of Birth Center, which gives the public a glimpse into the birth and neonatal care of animals such as pigs, sheep, goats, and chickens. They also performed and moderated procedures at the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association’s Surgery Suite, which invites fairgoers to observe live spay and neuter surgeries performed on rescue animals.

CVM research also had a strong presence at the fair. The Animal Cancer Care Research team joined the Masonic Cancer Center for Goldy vs. Cancer Day at the fair to bring awareness to cancer impacting companion animals and helpful resources. Researchers from the Veterinary Clinical Investigation Center conducted a study in the Driven to Discover facility to investigate how comprehensible research consent forms really are.

Surgery moderator Dr. Jody Lulich, professor of internal medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine, speaks to a crowd gathered to watch a live spay procedure at the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association Surgery Suite.

Members of the Companion Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network at CVM also joined the state Board of Animal Health and the Department of Health to discuss antibiotic use, antibiotic resistance, and the environmental impacts of these life-saving drugs. Fairgoers also learned more about chronic wasting disease and its impact from the Minnesota Center for Prion Research and Outreach.

Educational ambassador birds from The Raptor Center wowed onlookers at the Department of Natural Rescouces’s outdoor Garden Stage while staff and volunteers educated the crowd all about raptors and their importance.
