To celebrate the next chapter of their careers, outgoing residents and interns at the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) were honored at the annual House Officer Completion Ceremony.
Mentors and CVM community members gathered on June 18 to recognize the contributions of residents and interns of the Veterinary Medical Center, The Raptor Center, and the Veterinary Public Health and Preventative Medicine Residency program.
“We're here to celebrate these individuals who emulate all parts of our mission,” emcee and assistant professor Laura Motschenbacher told event attendees. “They do lots of research, they do excellent teaching, they provide endless service, and they give a lot of us a purpose for why we're here. I know I'm here because I find joy in teaching them.”
Two awards were presented as part of the ceremony. The 2025 Resident Award of Excellence was given to Kait McEnaney, a resident in large animal internal medicine. Award recipients are nominated by their mentors for their outstanding efforts in teaching, clinical services, and research.
“Kait is a great natural teacher, and she's been my first resident to get nothing but positive student reviews,” says associate professor Alex Bianco. “Quoting from a student review, ‘Dr. McEnaney is one of the most passionate, loving, intelligent, large animal doctors. She goes above and beyond to explain cases and concepts in detail, and ensures students feel heard and feel like they can contribute to cases in their treatment plans.”
Also nominated for the award were McKenna Andelin, Kim Demos-Davies, Sydney Oberholtzer and Rachael Schulte.
The Faculty Mentorship Award was presented to Arno Wuenschmann, who directs the pathology residency program. The award recognizes a faculty member who goes above and beyond in their mentoring and teaching of residents.
“Our residents come from all over the globe to be with us and train with us, and Arno is the first person they talk to when they start down the road with us, and he makes them feel so welcome here in an unfamiliar place,” says Alexandra Armstrong, a former resident in the pathology program and assistant professor at CVM . “He's a big community builder, even though he might not describe himself that way.”
Maria Sol Perez, Caitlin Tearney and Scott Wells were also nominated for the award.
