Senior veterinary technician Rosemary Klass answered the call for volunteer performers and found herself performing onstage at the 42nd annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Concert.
Klass sang “His Eye is on the Sparrow” as part of the program, which was held earlier this month at the University’s Ted Mann Concert Hall. This year’s concert intermixed the words of Dr. King with reflections and performances from U of M students and the greater Twin Cities community.
“For quite a while I wanted to participate in either an MLK or Black history month celebration,” Klass says, “so I replied to the ‘talent call’ and was elated to hear back from them! They treated me like a celebrity.
“I have been singing ever since childhood and I come from a family of singers: duets with my mother, then church choirs and singing with my sister. I write songs and play the piano and the violin, a little,” Klass adds. “I enjoy singing to put a ray of hope in people's hearts!”
Klass says the concert was an amazing experience to participate in. “To celebrate one of the bravest heroes of our time! To meet so many wonderful guests and performers was so enjoyable and an honor. I'm still smiling!”
A video of the concert is available online. Klass’ performance begins at the 36:45 mark.
