  • Delmar Finco, ’59 DVM, ’68 PhD, Watkinsville, Ga., died on June 8, 2023, at age 86. In 1970, Finco became a professor at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine where he taught and conducted research in small animal nephrology and urology until his retirement. He was a founding diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Finco is survived by his wife, his former wife, four children, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a sister, two sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews.

     

  • Paul Dettloff, ’67 DVM, Arcadia, Wis., died on July 7, 2023, at age 81. Dettloff founded Dr. Paul's Lab in 1996 and served as the staff veterinarian for Organic Valley from 2002-2019. In 2017 he was honored with Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association’s 50 Years of Veterinary Service Award. He is survived by his wife, five children, six grandchildren, a brother, a sister, and several nieces and nephews.

  • Arden Nelson, ’76 DVM, LaPorte, Colo., died on May 8, 2023, at age 70. Nelson was a board-certified dairy veterinarian. He and his wife, Dr. Meg Cattell, owned and operated Windsor Dairy. Nelson was recognized by his colleagues as the American Association of Bovine Practitioners as the 1994 Practitioner of the Year. He is survived by his wife, four children, a grandson, and his sisters.

  • Kermit Johnson, ’56 DVM, Oak Park Heights, Minn., died on July 5, 2022, at the age of 92. In 1956, Johnson joined the Milbank Veterinary Clinic in Milbank, S.D. Twenty-five years later, he took a job with the South Dakota Livestock Sanitary Board. Johnson is survived by three children, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

  • Alan Vogen, ’65 DVM, Lakeville, Minn., died on May 4, 2023, at the age of 83. He is survived by three children, six grandchildren, and many friends.

  • Donald Dachel, ’60 DVM, Chippewa Falls, Wis., died on June 26, 2023 at age 88. Upon graduating, Dachel began practicing at the Chippewa Veterinary Clinic in Chippewa Falls. He continued his practice there until 1980 and ultimately retired from veterinary medicine in 1995. Dachel is survived by his four children, four grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.

  • Edward Larson, ‘56 DVM, Watertown S.D., died on April 22, 2023, at age 90. Larson practiced veterinary medicine from 1956 to 2022. Throughout his career, he was involved in 4-H, endurance races, and horse shows, as well as volunteering services to the local zoo and animal shelter. He is survived by his wife, Anne; five children; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers; a sister; and numerous nieces and nephews.

     

  • Melvin M. Prantner ’76 DVM, Fall River, Wis., died on April 29, 2023, at age 76. Prantner was a large animal veterinarian for many years before completing a master’s degree in veterinary pathology and going to work for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture. He is survived by his four children, two sisters, two brothers, and other relatives and friends.

  • Charles “Chuck” Gibson, ’61, DVM, Rice Lake, Wis., died on June 2, 2022, at the age of 89. Gibson built a veterinary practice in Elbow Lake, Minn. He later earned his PhD in veterinary obstetrics and gynecology in 1971. From 1977 to 1990, he taught at the veterinary school at Michigan State University. Gibson is survived by three sons, 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one brother.
