  • Ed Pavek, ’63 DVM, Minnetonka, Minn., died on Oct. 22, 2021, at 87. After working at a couple of veterinary practices, Pavek and his wife Jane opened the Pavek Animal Hospital in 1978 and ran it until his retirement in 2019. He is survived by his wife, four children, and six grandchildren.

  • Charles B. "Charlie" Woods, ’73 DVM, Huntersville, N.C., died on Aug. 14, 2021, at 73. Woods completed an internship and residency at the University of Georgia. Afterward, he practiced as a veterinarian in Everett, Wash., for more than 40 years before moving to North Carolina. Woods is survived by his wife, Janis, and his daughter, Elizabeth.

  • Helen A. Knutt, ’74 DVM, Cando, N.D., died on Sept. 1, 2021, at 83. Following graduation, Knutt set up a veterinary practice in Rocklake, N.D., and founded a satellite office in Langdon, N.D., in 1977. She closed her practice in 2001 and later worked for the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, as a supervisory veterinary medical officer and inspector in charge at the North American Bison Cooperative in New Rockford, N.D., as well as two plants in Mandan before her retirement in 2007. Knutt is survived by two daughters, three granddaughters, one sister, a sister-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.

  • Lyle J. Hanson, ’52 DVM, Canon City, Colo., died on July 31, 2021, at 94. After receiving his veterinary degree from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, Hanson joined the College as an instructor in the veterinary pathology and parasitology division.

  • Thomas Hagerty ’59 DVM, St. Michael, Minn., died on August 14, 2021, at 85. Hagerty spent 25 years of his career practicing large and small animal medicine in St. Michael. He also served as the executive director of the Minnesota State Board of Animal Health from 1984 until his retirement as state veterinarian in 2001. Hagerty spent another 15 years as the lead veterinarian of the Minnesota State Fair. He also was active in many civil and agricultural organizations for decades. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his five children; 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; two siblings; and many other relatives.

  • Randall Murray, ’85 DVM, Bemidji, Minn., died on April 30, 2021, at age 62. In pursuit of his passion for animal care, Murray purchased the Blackduck Vet Clinic in Blackduck, Minn., before moving his operation to Bemidji, where he opened the Friendly Vet Clinic. Murray worked at the clinic until his passing. He also had an affinity for rabbits and spent much of the 1990s successfully breeding and showing New Zealand Reds all over Minnesota. Murray is survived by his two children, his mother, three siblings, two grandchildren, and many extended relatives.

  • Loyal “Doc” Monson, ’69 DVM, Plum City, Wis., died on April 9, 2021, at age 81. Before starting his veterinary career, Monson served abroad in the U.S. Army for a few years. Upon returning stateside, he obtained his DVM and opened a large animal practice in Plum City, where he served the surrounding farms for more than 40 years until his retirement in 2010. Monson is survived by his two children, five grandchildren, one great-grandson, two siblings, several nieces, and other relatives and friends.

  • Douglas Mason, ’69 DVM, Chippewa Falls, Wis., died on May 9 at age 75. Mason entered private practice following his graduation from veterinary school but went on to spend most of his veterinary career working for the USDA as an inspector for meat processing plants. Additionally, he served in the U.S. Army and the Wisconsin Army National Guard, retiring with a rank of colonel. Mason is survived by his wife, Cheryl; three children; nine grandchildren; two brothers; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

  • Rodney Neubert, ’61 DVM, Fairfield, Calif., died on June 9, 2021, at age 88.
