Four College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) DVM students were named scholarship winners during the 56th American Association of Bovine Practitioners Annual Conference held in late September.
“CVM made a very impressive showing at the AABP, with four of our DVM students winning five prestigious scholarships,” says Dr. Sandra Godden, CVM associate dean of graduate programs and former AABP president. “We are incredibly proud of our students, who represent the next generation of bovine veterinarians.”
Fourth-year student Sonja Gilje received two scholarships, winning a $7,500 Zoetis Foundation Scholarship and a $5,000 Merck Animal Health Bovine Veterinary Student Recognition Award.
Fourth-year student Madison Baumgartner received a Zoetis Foundation Scholarship.
Fourth-year student Cristina Blanco won a $5,000 James H. Bias Scholarship.
Third-year student Ana Ruiz, a member of the inaugural SDSU PPVM (2+2) program, received a Merck Animal Health Bovine Veterinary Student Recognition Award.
The Zoetis scholarship is awarded to outstanding students of all veterinary career tracks. The Merck award recognizes outstanding students who are interested in beef and/or dairy veterinary medicine. The James H. Bias scholarship is awarded to AABP veterinary student members from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds who demonstrate excellence in their leadership skills and passion in their pursuit of a career in beef or dairy medicine.
The awards will enable recipients to further pursue their careers in bovine medicine. In total, the AABP Foundation received 260 scholarship applications and awarded 51 scholarships. The scholarships are funded by AABP members, AABP industry partners Merck Animal Health, the Zoetis Foundation, and the AABP Foundation.
