    Investing in Minnesota’s environment

The Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) recently provided $3.3 million to CVM researchers with the goal of funding projects that will “help maintain and enhance Minnesota’s environment and natural resources.”

Deer

$1.8 million for rapid testing for CWD: Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a deadly neurodegenerative disease that affects while tailed deer in Minnesota. The disease is highly transmissible, and remains so even after the affected animal has passed away. This project hopes to develop a device that can test for CWD in hours, rather than days.

Fox

$500,000 for mapping the habitats of urban carnivores: This project aims to give communities a better sense of the behaviors of red foxes, grey foxes, and coyotes in order to decrease concerns and improve interactions.

Moose

$400,000 for studying the transmission of brainworm between white tailed deer and moose: Brainworm, which is transmitted to moose through white tailed deer, causes debilitating neurological disease and often result in death for moose. This project aims to map the transmission of brainworm in order to find ways to limit the risk.

Forest

$350,000 for understanding the use of spruce grouse as a sentinel species: This project aims to identify the ways that climate change and the harvesting of timber affects spruce grouse. Spruce grouse are a sentinel species, meaning that they are often looked to as an indicator of potential environmental risks towards humans.
