    Helping hands

SIRVS food drive collects more than 2,000 pounds of donations.

The College of Veterinary Medicine Student Initiative for Reservation Veterinary Service (SIRVS) helped out a ton recently in Red Lake Nation—literally.

SIRVS gathered urgently needed food and supplies to supplement the work of dedicated community members for pets in the Red Lake Nation. SIRVS volunteers and their partners, Awesiinyag are Loved by the Anishinaabeg of Red Lake Nation, were able to safely distribute more than 2,000 pounds of pet food, 450 doses of over-the-counter flea/ticket preventative, 16 kennels, and various other treats, toys and supplies for pets in need.

Two SIRVS student volunteers drove the donated food and supplies to Red Lake Nation, where the food was safely distributed throughout the community. Also assisting in this initiative were Secondhand Hounds, an animal rescue located in Minnetonka, Minn., and M&M Partners in Rescue, a Minnesota nonprofit focused on building partnerships within communities to bridge resources to animals and people.
