The coronavirus pandemic has added stress to the already demanding lives of veterinary students, but their peers and alumni of the College of Veterinary Medicine are stepping up to help students find bright spots.
This past fall, the college introduced “Crash Nights,” weekly programs that invite DVM students to meet virtually with alumni for fun activities and educational discussions. The sessions are intended as a chance for the two groups to connect in a less formal atmosphere.
“The point of this was to create fun conversations with alumni,” says Kris Hayden, events & alumni relations associate for the college. “It’s a way for alumni to get involved and students to pick and choose nights that were interesting to them.”
The Crash Nights cover a wide range of topics, from discussing career opportunities with practicing veterinarians to learning how to knit. Some activities focus on fun, such as students learning to brew beer. Others encourage personal development and growth, such as planning a transition from veterinary school to a job following graduation.
It was a great way to spend a bit of an evening!

Rachel Spencer ’16 DVM, hosted a night covering topics such as tips and tricks for fourth-year clinical rotations, getting the most out of an externship, and identifying what matters most when looking into work opportunities after graduation.
“She was honest and thoughtful in her presentation, and she fostered meaningful conversation with those who attended,” says Samantha Braman, class of 2022, who attended Spencer’s crash night. “It was a great way to spend a bit of an evening!”
For Spencer, the chance to connect with students was an enjoyable opportunity.
“The students had great questions, and I really enjoyed the discussion,” she says.
Topics for upcoming Crash Nights include a virtual game night, a three-session discussion about career opportunities, and the continuation of a session on crocheting a scarf.
