  • Damodar R. Deshmukh, ’67 PhD, Ballwin, Mo., passed away on June 14, 2022, at age 84. Deshmukh worked for the federal government as a pathologist until 2005. He specialized in the transmission of diseases from animals to humans. Deshmukh is survived by his wife, Nirmala; two sons; and five grandkids.

  • Larry Paisley, ’72 PhD, died on Jan. 21, 2020. He received his MS in veterinary obstetrics and gynecology. 

     

  • Dr. Keum Hwa Choi, DVM, ’90 PhD, Shoreview, Minn., died on May 8, 2023, at age 69. She worked for nearly four decades at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, founding its complementary and alternative medicine service. Choi is survived by her daughter, mother, and four sisters.

  • Mary Urhausen, ’73 DVM, Milwaukee, died on Nov. 20, 2018, at age 70. Urhausen acquired a love for animals while growing up on a farm. After obtaining her DVM, she worked for many years at Franksville Veterinary Clinic in Franksville, Wis. Urhausen is survived by two sisters, her brother, a cousin, and other relatives and friends.

  • Janice Niedermeier, ’73 DVM, Clinton, Wis., died on Aug. 4, 2021, at age 71. Niedermeier operated Healthy Companions Veterinary Clinic in Janesville, Wis.

  • Wayne O. Larson ’73 DVM, Kaneville, Ill., died on Dec. 29, 2022, at age 75. After graduation, Larson and his family moved to Kaneville, where he would go on to establish his own clinic, Kaneville Veterinary Services, which served the large and small animal community for over 30 years.

  • David L. Holmberg, ’73 DVM, Elora, Ontario, died on May 13, 2008, at age 58. Holmberg taught small animal surgery at the University of Guelph from 1986 to 2008. The Stoneymeadow Dr. David Holmberg Scholarship was established in his honor.

  • James Weege, ’69 DVM, Ocean Ridge, Fla., died on Oct. 20, 2022, at age 77. He is survived by his wife, Susan; his two sons; a stepson; a stepdaughter; a brother; a sister; and six grandchildren.

  • Kenneth Speltz, ’67 DVM, Lino Lakes, Minn., died on Feb. 15, 2023, at age 80. Speltz founded Skyline Veterinary Hospital in 1970 and continued to practice until his passing. He also served as a board member for the Affiliated Emergency Veterinarian Service for multiple years throughout his career. Speltz is survived by his wife, Jayne; four children; and 13 grandchildren.
