  • Mark Mattison, ’76 DVM, La Crosse, Wis., died on April 15, 2022, at 70. Mattison practiced large and small animal veterinary medicine as a partner at the La Crosse Veterinary Clinic for 39 years. In 1988, he received his International Veterinary Acupuncture Society Certification, practicing animal acupuncture locally while lecturing across the United States and Canada. Mattison is survived by his wife, Wendy; two children; six grandchildren; and four sisters.

  • Charles Blackbourn, ’60 DVM, Winter Haven, Fla., died on April 15, 2022, at 86. After graduating from veterinary school, Blackbourn became a large and small animal veterinarian, establishing Rock Veterinary Clinic in Janesville, Wis., which ran for over 30 years. In addition to treating animals, he participated in field trials with dogs and horses. He is survived by his two sons, two daughters, and six grandchildren.

  • Ernest Drager, ’83 DVM, Bloomington, Minn., died on April 8, 2022, at 73. Drager opened Bush Lake Pet Hospital in 1984 and France Avenue Pet Hospital in 2004. He retired in February 2022. He is survived by his spouse, Lola; two daughters; his brother; his sister; nieces and nephews; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and friends.

  • Thomas Eshbach, ’96 DVM, Fredericksburg, Va., died on Jan., 11, 2022, at 59. Eshbach founded TLC Home Veterinary Services in 2000, allowing him to visit patients in the comfort of their own homes. Before becoming a veterinarian, he worked as a physician assistant and cared for inmates at the Lancaster County Jail in Lancaster, Penn. He is survived by his wife, Roseann; two brothers; and one nephew.

  • Philip Salem, ’61 DVM, Selby, S.D., died on Jan. 6, 2022, at 98. After serving in the U.S. Army, Holmberg worked as an agriculture instructor before earning his DVM. Upon graduation, he served as state veterinarian for Idaho before moving back to South Dakota to found the Salem Veterinary Clinic. He is survived by his three children and his brother.

  • Paul Holmberg, ’60 DVM, St. Paul, died on March 15, 2022, at 90. He served in the U.S. Navy before pursuing a DVM, which marked the starting point of a 43-year veterinary career. He is survived by his wife, Marion; four children; and 11 grandchildren.

  • John Quast, ’66 DVM, ’73 PhD, Midland, Mich., died on March 20, 2022, at 83. He pursued his DVM and a PhD in pathology after serving in the U.S. Navy. He landed a job with the Dow Chemical Company in its toxicology department. Over the course of his 25-year career, Quast led many studies aimed at protecting human health and the environment. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his daughter; his son; and five grandchildren.

  • Henry Lawston, ’68 DVM, Cresco, Iowa, died on Feb. 18, 2022, at 79. Lawston founded a veterinary practice in Lanesboro, Minn., treating both large and small animals. In 1987, he sold his practice and worked full-time in meat inspection for the USDA for the next seven years. Lawston spent another five years working as a part-time inspector. He is survived by his wife, Harriet; his two sons; and three grandchildren.
