In support of her career ambitions in equine medicine, Katie Orth, a third-year DVM student at the College of Veterinary Medicine, has been awarded a scholarship from the EQUUS Foundation.
The foundation announced the award of $40,000 in scholarships to 33 undergraduate and graduate-level students enrolled in equine studies and veterinary programs. Orth is the recipient of an EQUUS Foundation Equine Studies Scholarship, which comes with a monetary award of $1,000 to 2,500 and is made possible through a grant from the National Philanthropic Trust.
Orth, who credits 4-H with sparking her love of horses, has developed an interest in equine dentistry and may pursue further education and training in this area. She sees a career in veterinary medicine as an opportunity to give back to her community and the animals she loves.
“[Horses] have taught me so many life skills,” Orth told EQUUS. “I enjoy equine medicine and the challenge of trying to solve issues that are going on with horses.”
Orth was one of 13 graduate or veterinary students to receive a scholarship from the Equine Studies Scholarship program, which was established in 2023 to support the next generation of equine professionals.
