Carol Baumann, a DVM student at the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), has been awarded the 2021 Zinpro/Schugel Scholarship.

The scholarship recognizes outstanding academic accomplishments by a veterinary student studying food-animal medicine at CVM. The scholarship honors Dr. LaVerne Schugel, former director of Zinpro’s research and nutritional services department, who graduated from CVM in 1957.

Baumann says the scholarship will help support her on her journey to becoming a veterinarian.

“After graduation, my goal is to practice as a mixed-animal veterinarian in the Midwest,” she says. “I want to help owners understand the important roles that proper health and nutrition play in the long-term wellbeing of their animals.”

Baumann’s passion for animals has deep roots in her childhood. She grew up on a farm in Illinois, raising and showing dairy cattle in 4-H, caring for her horse, and bonding with her dogs. Her passion grew as she aged, leading her to pursue a career in veterinary medicine at CVM.
